Preservation

Preservation refers to the long term protection and care taking of mound sites. The physical preservation of the Panther Spirit Effigy Mound will be the most significant permanent community resource developed through this project. In addition, the Juneau County Historical Society plans to create a permanent exhibit which will document the restoration process and hgihlight artifacts which promote cultural sensitivity and deeper understanading of prehistoric Woodland mound building societies.

Since Mauston's Panther Spirit Effigy Mound is located on private property, public access will be very limited. Realizing the educational significance of the Panther Mound, students of Olson Middle School petitioned the Mauston School Board to recreate a 1/2 scale Panther Effigy Mound on the grounds of OMS. Permission was granted and now future generations of students and community members can visit and learn from a public mound site.
