The first critical step in actual field work at the Panther Spirit Effigy Mound site is determining what needs to be done to restore the Mound. This involves making decisions around clearing the site, repairing any damage to the Mound and revegetating the mound. There are also sensitive cultural and political issues that will need to be considered throughout the entire restoration process. Members of the Juneau County Historical Society and students of Olson Middle School will be involved in all aspects of restoration.
Currently on site activities toward restoring the Panther Spirit Effigy Mound will include
~ Taping off the site for perimeter protection
~ Clearing ten feet off of the effigy footprint
~ Surveying the Mound
~ Using a grid system to measure the mound ~ Analyzing the Mound using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
~ Repairing damage to the Mound
~ Determining and establishing ground cover
